“재능이 열심히 노력하지 않을 때는, 노력이 재능을 이긴 다.”라는 그 말을 기억하는가? 재능의 수준과 상관없이, 열심히 노력하면, 여러분은 더 나은 음악가가 될 것이다. 하지만 열심히 노력하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다. 내 친구 Charlie 는 내게 자 신의 동료인 Tom 에 관해 말해 주었는데, 그는 일찍 일을 시작해 서 다른 모든 이들이 퇴근한 이후 오랫동안 머물며 매주 시간 외 근무를 했다. ‘헌신적이고 근면한 직원’이라고 여러분은 생각할지 도 모른다. 아마 아닐 것이다. Tom 이 투입한 추가 근무 시간은 그의 생산성을 높이는 데 아무 도움이 되지 않았는데, 왜냐하면 그는 결코 우선순위나 마감 시간을 정하지 않고, 이리저리 과업을 옮겨 다녔기 때문이다. 중요한 과업에 노력을 집중하지 않은 채, 그것을 완수하지 못할 때가 많았다. 그는 너무 많은 일을, 그것도 잘못된 순서로 하느라 바빴다. Charlie 는 매일 밤 사무실을 나서 며 “‘오래 그리고 열심히’ 일하는 것이 아니라, ‘오래 그리고 오래’ 일하는 Tom 이 있네.”라고 생각했다. 목표는 여러분의 노력이 가 야 할 길을 안내한다.
